Shield H Quarter Horses are bred for natural ability, calm dispositions, balanced conformation, and trainability.

Disposition – the inherent qualities of mind and character or temperament – is a trait we strive to breed for. We have found the American Quarter Horses to have a natural tendency or inclination to act in a trainable way, which we all appreciate! Our horses’ conformation – the structure, balance, and muscling of the body – directly determines their movement, athletic ability, and soundness for the various tasks we need them to do.

Our performance bred horses are versatile enough to be competitive in a variety of areas, all dependent on how you want to finish them! They are great-minded, easy to handle, fun to train, and fantastic partners who will hold up to your program. We also know how much fun it is to ride a pretty horse so we have colors for everyone! Good conformation and incredible minds are our #1 priority with our program.

We have two breeding programs: our ranch-bred horses and our reining-bred horses.

Ranch-Bred Mares

The ranch-bred horses are trained and ridden for versatile, practical work (cattle handling, trail riding, general ranch use) with a focus on agility, natural cow sense, and stamina. Their conformation leads to a stocky, muscular build for which American Quarter Horses are known. We develop training methods that focus on responsiveness to minimal cues and natural instincts to work cattle.

Reining-Bred Mares

The reining-bred horses are selected based on prominent, established, and well-known pedigrees for the utmost marketability. We also prioritize functional, athletic conformation, along with willing, trainable temperaments to endure the high-impact, technical maneuvers like the sliding stops and spins. Most of our reining-bred mares were trained and shown in AQHA and NRHA shows. We evaluate potential sires based on their performance record, progeny, and genetic soundness rather than just pedigree, aiming to balance agility with ability.

Our Breeding Credentials

Shield H Quarter Horses has been breeding registered American Quarter Horses since 1981 and has established reputable bloodlines in the reining, cutting, and roping horse worlds. Our ranch horse and show horse prospects are raised in the open country where they learn to handle themselves in the real world. Our foals are home raised and trained to ensure a solid partner for our clients. Several of our prospects have gone on to prove themselves in the competitive roping, reining, ranch riding, and even halter classes in local open shows, county and state fair shows, and the larger AQHA, NRHA, USTRC, and NRCHA shows.

About Our Retired Show Mares

Our retired show mares will continue to be artificially inseminated by some of the best stallions available. We have worked with a variety of large breeding operations throughout the country and have been very happy with the results. We currently have prospects by Gunners Special Nite, Gunners Tinseltown, Hollywoodstinseltown, PS Mega Shine Chic, and Mr Farenheit. All foals are out of quality mares, most of which have NRHA earnings and/or a nice show record with AQHA.
